MADISON COUNTY - The Madison County Sheriff's Office has arrested two men and a juvenile in a major copper wire theft bust. Investigators have recovered a large portion of copper wiring that was stolen late last week. Investigators believe this group has been stealing copper wire for years, and just last week they stole at least 000 dollars in copper wiring from farmers. It's a growing trend for thieves to steal copper wiring, and then sell it to recycling plants. The Sheriff's Office says 44-year-old Michael Shane Rasmussen from Idaho Falls, and 47-year-old Garrett Dean Chaffin from Shelley, stole copper wiring from locations in Madison, Jefferson, Fremont, and Bonneville counties. Multiple charges from each of those counties are pending. "Our patrol went up into the hills to see if they could find a campsite or somewhere where they were burning and they actually came across their campsite with a pile of their cords in the pits smoldering," said Captain Travis Williams, with the Madison County Sheriff's Office. The Madison County Sheriff's Office has collected a trailer full of evidence. They're looking for fingerprints, and proof.
